Rimini In the sixth century before Christ the today’s province Rimini was originally populated by the Etruscans. They were driven out by the Gauls 200 years later. In the second century BC the Romans assumed the power and founded as an important strategic trading point in 268 BC besides smaller cities the under Latin law being colony Ariminum (later Rimini). After the fall of the Roman Empire the region was fallen under the Byzantine rule. 200 years later king Pepin conquered the province and gave it in 756 BC to the Pope. In the Middle Ages the city states of the Emilia Romagna obtained their independence of Frederick II and also of the Pope. In the late 13th century Rimini was under the rule of the dynasty of the Malestas and became the centre of arts and culture. In the 16th century Rimini fell to the Papal States. 1797 Rimini entered into the cisalpine republic. 1860 the region was admitted to the kingdom of Italy.
