In the sixth century before Christ the today’s province Rimini was originally populated by the Etruscans. They were driven out by the Gauls 200 years later. In the second century BC the Romans assumed the power and founded as an important strategic trading point in 268 BC besides smaller cities the under Latin law being colony Ariminum (later Rimini). In the late 13th century Rimini was under the rule of the dynasty of the Malestas and became the centre of arts and culture. In the 16th century Rimini fell to the Papal States. 1797 Rimini entered into the cisalpine republic. 1860 the region was admitted to the kingdom of Italy.
